Helmut Zapf was born on the 4th of March in 1656 in Rauschengesees (Thüringen).
He received his first piano and organ lessons from the local priest.
After graduating from school he studied church music in Eisenach and Halle from 1974 to 1976 (organ under Gottfried Preller and Hans-Günter Wauer).
In this period he regularly attendend the holiday classes for contemporary music in Gera (Thüringen).
From 1979 to 1982 he worked as cantor and organist in Eisenberg (Thüringen).
In 1982 he became a master student under Prof. Georg Katzer at the Akademie der Künste der DDR in Berlin and studied under him untill 1986 (with one and a half years of interruption due to the military service as construction soldier/ denier of arms).
Ever since then he is working as a freelance composer and lives in Zepernick (close to Berlin).


Hitherto existing compositions: chamber music works, pieces for choir and orchestra, scenic compositions (Lilith and Approximation) as well as various electro-acoustic pieces with and without acoustic instruments.
